How to See Who Doesn't Follow You on Instagram Without a Password: The Safe Way Using Your Data Export

Instagram does not have a button that tells you who does not follow you back. You can still find out without giving your password to an app: download your official data archive, upload the ZIP file, and compare the lists directly in your browser.

What you can see in your Instagram export

The file Instagram prepares for you contains two lists: followers, the accounts that follow you, and following, the accounts you follow. Comparing them reveals three simple situations:

• Not following you back: you follow them, but they are not in your followers list.

• Following you, not followed back: they follow your profile, but you do not follow theirs.

• Mutuals: you follow each other.

The export can also include pending follow requests, blocked profiles, accounts hidden from stories, and accounts you recently unfollowed. It is useful for organising your lists, but it is not a complete history of your activity.

A non-follower is not always an unfollower

This distinction matters. If someone appears in the accounts that do not follow you, it does not automatically mean they unfollowed you yesterday. They may never have followed you, they may have changed their username, or their account may have been deactivated.

An archive is a snapshot of the moment you request it. To understand how your lists change over time, compare exports downloaded on different dates. Keep in mind that deleted or renamed accounts can make some results less precise.

How to download the right Instagram file

1. Open Instagram and go to Settings and activity.

2. Open Accounts Center.

3. Choose Your information and permissions, then Download your information.

4. Select the Instagram profile you want to analyse.

5. In customise information, select Followers and people/pages followed. Remove other categories if you do not need them.

6. Choose JSON as the format and All time as the date range.

7. Create the file, wait for Meta's email, and download the ZIP from the link.

Menu labels can vary slightly between app versions, but the path always goes through Accounts Center and your account information.

Why this method does not need your password

Apps that ask for Instagram credentials need to access your account to read these lists. With a data export, you decide what to download before opening any website.
